# Comments

Visitors comment on published blog posts. Comments are not taken on pages. NextPress sends no email about new comments, so check the **Comments** screen.

By default, comments are on, and each new comment waits for approval before it shows.

## Choose the site's comment rules

1. Open **Settings** in the sidebar, then the **Discussion** tab.
2. Set the switches: **Allow comments**: visitors can comment on this site's posts.
3. **Review comments first**: new comments show only after someone approves them.
4. **Let visitors create an account**: visitors can sign up at `/admin/register`. They get the subscriber role. This switch is off by default.
5. Press **Save Changes**.

A single post can also close its own comments. Visitors then see "Comments are closed on this post."

## How visitors comment

The **Post Comments** block shows approved comments and a **Leave a Comment** form with **Name**, **Email** and the comment. Signed-in people comment under their account name.

- A visitor without an account must give a name. The email is optional and only your team sees it.
- A comment can be up to 10,000 characters.
- One address can send up to 5 comments a minute. After that, the visitor sees "You are commenting very fast. Wait a minute and try again."
- While **Review comments first** is on, the visitor sees "Thanks! Your comment will show once it is approved."

In the block's settings you can choose **Show comment form**, **Show comment count**, **Allow replies** and **Comments per page**.

## Moderate comments

You need the editor, admin or owner role.

1. Open **Comments** in the sidebar, under **Content**.
2. Use the status list to show **All Comments**, **Approved**, **Pending**, **Spam** or **Trash**.
3. On a comment, use: **Approve Comment**: shows a pending comment on the site.
4. **Edit Comment**: change the name, email, text or status, including moving it to **Trash**.
5. **Mark as Spam**: hides the comment.
6. **Delete Comment**: removes it for good.

Only approved comments appear on the site.

## Keep comments under control

- Leave **Review comments first** on until you know your audience.
- Use **Mark as Spam** or **Trash** when unsure. **Delete Comment** cannot be undone.
- Check the **Pending** list regularly.
