Blogs and posts

Set up a blog, write and publish a post, and show posts on any page with post blocks.

On this page

A blog is a list of posts with its own home page. Every post belongs to one blog. A site can have more than one blog. How a blog's posts look is set once for the whole blog, so you do not design each post.

Set up a blog

The first time you create a post on a site with no blog, NextPress asks you to set one up. You can also start a new blog with Set up a new blog in the New blog post dialog.

  1. In Set up your blog, type a Name, such as "Notes from the team".
  2. In Address, type where the blog's home page lives. The default is blog, so the home page is at example.com/blog.
  3. Under The home page lists posts as, pick Cards, Grid or List.
  4. Under Each post shows, turn on or off Cover picture, Date, Reading time, Author, Previous and next and Comments.
  5. Press Set up blog.

The blog's home page is created and published straight away. These choices can be changed later in the post editor.

Write a post

  1. Press New at the top of the admin.
  2. In What are you making?, pick Blog post.
  3. In New blog post, type a Title. If the site has more than one blog, choose it in Blog.
  4. Press Create post. The post editor opens.
  5. Write the post, then press Save.

A new post is a draft. Visitors cannot see it until you publish it.

You can also start a post from Posts in the sidebar, under Content.

Publish a post

  1. Press Publish. The Publish Post dialog opens.
  2. Check Post URL. Use only lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens.
  3. Press Publish.

On a published post, Save makes later changes live. To take a post off the site, press Published, then Move to Draft.

Categories and tags

Categories and tags are set on each post in the post editor. On the site, the Post Info block shows them, together with the date and reading time.

Show posts on any page

Drag blocks from the Post group of the Blocks panel:

  • Post List shows a blog's posts in a grid, list or card layout.
  • Post Title, Post Excerpt and Featured Image show parts of a post.
  • Post Info shows the date, categories, tags and reading time.
  • Author Box shows the author's picture, name and bio.
  • Post Comments shows approved comments and a comment form.
  • Post Navigation links to the previous and next posts.
  • Table of Contents lists the headings on the page.
  • Reading Progress shows how far the reader has scrolled.

Comments on posts

Visitors can comment on a published post when the site allows comments. See Comments.

The RSS feed

Published posts are listed in the site's feed at /feed. Password-protected posts are left out. The feed can be turned off, and its length set, in Settings, on the Reading tab. See Site settings.
